How do our horses show us affection?

It is very clear to horse lovers how we can show them affection, (shower them with Well Gel products, mostly!) but sometimes you may wonder how they show it the other way around…

Although we may think at times they are somehow, we all know that horses cannot talk, nor do they act very much like people, making it tricky at times to truly understand their feelings.

Below are some points to look out for that may indicate your horse is displaying that same level of affection back to you!

Leaning – If your horse carefully tries to lean on you from time to time, this indicates that they want to feel tender contact. Horses love to feel any kind of body-contact they can get with their loved ones and you will often see them trying to lean into other horses when in the wild.

Obedience – If your horse displays obedience to you, it is a huge sign your beloved horse cares for you as much as you care for them. Of course this does not mean that a disobedient horse is an unloving one, but it is a key way that they show their affection.

Close attention – It sounds obvious, but even something as simple as your horse turning to face you is a sign of absolute affection. Much like many of us humans, if a horse is not interested in someone or something, they will pay it no attention. Your horse choosing to be close to you or giving you their full attention is a pure attempt of demonstrating just how infatuated they are with you.

Nuzzling – Your horse using their nose to nuzzle you is them using one of the most vulnerable parts of their body to show just how comfortable they are with your presence. Horses also tend to do this to their young foals as a sign of protection, and so your horse sharing this same action with you is a hint that they will always be looking out for you.
