It’s officially Autumn 🍁🍂
How are our horses affected by Autumn?
We all notice the change in daylight hours and how this affects the coat changes on our four legged friends. Suddenly their glossy summer coats start to shed and we need to spend a little more time grooming to remove the hair, scurf and sweat marks. It is especially worth taking extra care around the girth area and bridle lines, as this is the time of year when we may see rubs and hair loss in these sensitive areas.
Taking extra care around this time can help prevent issues with sensitive spots, using a soft brush or a quick wash off with our Wash & Glo or Ream Gleam products will certainly help as both of these no rinse formulas contain skin soothing organic aloe vera and calendula to aid coat condition and support the skin. Ream Gleam is great at this time of year and coming into winter to use as a hot cloth after clipping to remove grease from the coat and bring out the shine. Ream Gleam contains ginger, rosemary, mandarin & yarrow essential oils for their cleansing and warming qualities for use after exercise during the cooler months.
We are all aware that as the weather changes, with the much needed rainfall, muddy conditions can cause further issues for our horses and using a hot cloth product like Ream Gleam which contains ingredients to support the skin may be an added benefit, so make sure to use on the legs as well as the body. If mud becomes more problematic then using mud turnout boots or a product like Keratex Mud Sheld Powder is advisable and at the first sign of any small scabs or Mud Fever we advise applying Well Gel Original daily to the cleansed affected area to aid the skin’s own natural healing process and prevent any further damage. Well Gel Original is an organic aloe gel with 5 essential oils selected to support the skin when required, it is easily absorbed and a little goes a long way.
As the weeks progress we may also require our horses to wear rugs and neck covers, these can sometimes cause rubs around pressure points, so make sure to check your horse’s skin around vulnerable areas such as shoulders, hips, withers and the mane & tail. The Mane Event product can help protect the mane & tail from rubs and the 4 essential oils aid conditioned, healthy growth when used a few times a week massaged in to the base and brushed through to the ends it can help prevent breakages and protect from the mud at the same time. The Mane Event is now available in 2 sizes, 125g & 500g and both of these come as refills too, meaning less single use plastic required.
Remember, keeping your horse’s skin clean and in good condition doesn’t have to be hard work or expensive a quick hot cloth a few times a week will make it easier and gets you up close and able to notice any changes that may need further attention.
Here’s hoping for an Indian Summer🌞
